SOUTHERN SECTION VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS : Foothill Rolls Past La Quinta, Advances to Quarterfinals
Foothill halted host La Quinta’s 15-match winning streak with a 15-10, 15-7, 15-9 sweep Tuesday in the second round of Southern Section Division II volleyball playoffs.
Foothill (14-2) will face the Lakewood in Friday’s quarterfinals.
La Quinta (17-2) made 12 serve-reception errors, which distressed Coach Larry James. “They really took us out of our game with the serve,” James said.
“And then there’s Lambourne . . .”
Rich Lambourne, a Foothill senior outside hitter, dominated the match with 18 kills. But the Knights had an attack percentage of .761, while La Quinta, which ran a more balanced attack, hit only .597. Foothill controlled the Aztec offense with 11 team blocks; La Quinta had six.
“This is the farthest we’ve ever come,” Foothill Coach Chuck Cutenese said. “I want them to do as well as their ranking is--it’s No. 5 now, but we were No. 4. I think we should make the semis.”
