SANTA ANA — A California Highway Patrol officer was hospitalized with moderate injuries Monday night after his motorcycle hit a slick section on the Costa Mesa Freeway and overturned, police said.
Carlos Marzocca, 27, a four-year veteran of the CHP, was traveling north just south of 17th Street about 7:30 p.m. when he saw a ladder obstructing traffic in the car-pool lane. As he switched from the slow lane to the fast lane to remove the ladder, the motorcycle drove through a slick of diesel fuel and slid out from under him, CHP Officer Angel Johnson said.
Marzocca, who works out of the CHP’s Santa Ana office, suffered cuts and bruises all along his left side and was transported to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana for treatment, Johnson said. He was expected to remain in the hospital overnight for observation.
