HEALTH CARE : FHP Reaches Out to Enlarge Its Membership, Signs Pact With Hoag
FHP Inc., the Fountain Valley-based health maintenance organization, is reaching beyond its already established network of wholly owned medical facilities to enlarge its membership.
The company recently signed an agreement with Newport Beach’s Hoag Hospital to provide patients with a choice in their medical care.
The contract with the 421-bed hospital on Newport Boulevard is the fifth such pact signed with an Orange County hospital in the last year and reflects a strategy to use non-FHP hospitals as a way to stay competitive.
Instead of relying on the HMO’s medical facilities and salaried physicians (under a system called a staff model program), FHP members in the Newport Beach/Costa Mesa area can go to doctors affiliated with Hoag Hospital. Such flexibility makes FHP easier to sell to employer groups.
FHP also has contracts with St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, Anaheim Memorial Hospital in Anaheim and Brea Community Hospital in Brea.
