Daily News Plans Layoffs: The newspaper is planning 25 layoffs in its editorial department but has given the journalists’ union time to come up with cost-cutting alternatives, newsroom sources said. The newspaper’s executives disclosed the planned layoffs during a meeting with representatives of the Los Angeles Newspaper Guild and Editor Robert W. Burdick. Both sides agreed to meet again today to discuss ways to save money without layoffs, such as unpaid days off, unpaid leaves of absences and voluntary layoffs with severance packages, the sources said. They said the union was not told how much money the paper hopes to save or when the layoffs would occur. But James Lacher, executive vice president of Cooke Media Group Inc., told union representatives during the meeting that they needed to submit their alternatives quickly, one source said.
