‘Angels,’ ‘Tommy’ Top Drama Desk Nods

From Associated Press

Two productions previously seen in Southern California topped the list of nominees for Drama Desk awards for the best of the 1992-93 New York theater season. The nominees were announced Monday.

“Angels in America: Millennium Approaches” received 10 nominations. Tony Kushner’s play was produced last fall at the Mark Taper Forum, which remains a co-producer in New York. The show is scheduled to open tonight, but enough Drama Desk voters saw it over the weekend at press previews for it to qualify in Sunday’s balloting.

“Tommy,” the stage version of the Who’s rock opera that premiered at La Jolla Playhouse last year, received seven nominations.

Six plays were nominated for best play, and four musicals got nods from the organization of theater journalists and critics. Unlike the Tony Awards, which recognizes only Broadway productions, the Drama Desk honors Broadway and off-Broadway plays and musicals.

Best play nominees were “Angels in America” by Tony Kushner, “Jeffrey” by Paul Rudnick, “Joined at the Head” by Catherine Butterfield, “Oleanna” by David Mamet, “The Sisters Rosensweig” by Wendy Wasserstein and “Three Hotels” by Jon Robin Baitz.

Musicals nominated as best of the season were “Tommy,” “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” “Ruthless!” and “Wings.”
