Valvano’s Death Is Mourned
Hundreds of people lined up Thursday at the Catholic church in Apex, N.C., where Jim Valvano worshiped, waiting to pay their respects to the late North Carolina State basketball coach.
Some in the crowd wore black, others Wolfpack red. One child wore a souvenir T-shirt from N.C. State’s 1983 national championship.
At least 300 people arrived in the first hour and stood in a line that snaked out of the church and around a courtyard as Valvano’s family--Pam, his widow, and their three daughters--greeted everyone.
The life of the charismatic coach was celebrated with songs, stories and silence a day after he had lost a yearlong battle with cancer.
