I enjoyed reading Jenijoy La Belle’s “Happy Birthday, Dear William” (Commentary, April 21). I think that much ado about nothing has been made over the issue of the bard’s identity. It seemed to me that the Caltech English professor set the record straight.
Shakespearean actor Ian McKellan attributes the following to Mark Twain: “One of two things are certain: Either the plays, poems and sonnets were written by a man named William Shakespeare, or by someone claiming to be William Shakespeare.”
In any case, I plan to continue to read and reread and delight in the works for the great gift of our English heritage that they are.
As for the debunkers: Lord, what fools these mortals be.
