An El Monte father is leading an Asian Gang Awareness Coalition made up of parents, business representatives and community leaders, the group announced last week.
Richard Chiang, the father of two small children, said he helped organize the group because of the increasing influence of Asian gangs in the San Gabriel Valley.
Chiang, a reserve probation officer for Los Angeles County, said the Asian community needs to address the problem of Asian gangs and to sponsor alternative activities for young people. He also said the group will organize seminars for parents on Asian gangs.
