COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cal State Fullerton Rallies to Sweep Hawaii in Softball
Rose Garces had a fifth-inning home run to break a 2-2 tie and help Cal State Fullerton to a 6-2 victory over Hawaii in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday at Fullerton.
The Titans (26-16, 15-5 in conference) won the first game, 10-4.
Tiffany Boyd had three hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs in the second game for Fullerton. Boyd (12-9) also allowed two hits and struck out six in three innings to get the victory.
Hawaii scored two runs in each of the first two innings to lead, 4-2, in the first game. But Fullerton rallied for eight runs in the sixth inning, with Denise DeWalt’s two-run double giving the Titans a 6-4 lead.
Kelly Hunt had a hit and two RBIs and Tracie Noggle had three hits and drove in a run for Fullerton.
Cheryl Longeway (9-5) allowed four hits and no runs in the final 5 2/3 innings for the victory.
In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. softball:
Chapman 2-3, Cal State Dominguez Hills 0-2--Viki Vechinski pitched a three-hitter in the first game for host Chapman. In the second game, Rachel Fieber hit her third home run of the season in the first inning for Chapman (20-21, 5-13).
In the Big West Conference women’s tennis championships:
Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine eliminated--Fullerton lost its quarterfinal match to top-seeded UC Santa Barbara, 6-0, at the Ojai Valley Racquet Club. The Titans lost all 12 singles sets.
Irvine lost five three-set singles matches, and fell to fourth-seeded Hawaii, 5-1, in the quarterfinals. Krista Kuechler’s 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 3 singles was the only victory for the Anteaters.
