PREP ROUNDUP : Huntington Beach Hands Marina Its First Loss in Sunset League Golf

Huntington Beach handed Marina its first Sunset League golf loss Thursday, 410-415, in 18 holes at SeaCliff Country Club.

It was nothing spectacular, just a solid showing by Huntington Beach’s middle players.

“There aren’t really any turning points in golf,” junior Greg Uberuaga said. “Just a long, cold 4 1/2 hours.”

“You win with your (Nos.) 4, 5 and 6 players,” Oiler Coach Bill Seckington said. “And that pretty much bore out today. We won with our middle.”

Uberuaga, who usually plays No. 3, and No. 6 Brian Schippel, shot 83 and 84. Their Marina counterparts, Brock Cronn and Vinnie Perricone, came in with 86 and 88. Huntington Beach’s No. 3 player, Bryan Wheeler, was disqualified, and the 89 of Marina’s Jon Pan was thrown out.

The Oiler victory means Edison has a chance to play spoiler. Edison handed Huntington Beach (9-4, 6-2) a surprise loss earlier in the season, and has yet to play Marina at SeaCliff, which worries Coach Joe Crider.

“We didn’t come up with very good scores,” Crider said. “But that seems to happen every time we play Huntington Beach at SeaCliff. It’s very difficult for our kids who play and practice on Meadowlark to go play at SeaCliff.”

SeaCliff is generally regarded as much tougher than Meadowlark.

If Edison beats Marina (9-2, 8-1), the Oilers will tie the Vikings as league champions.
