COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Nine-Run Inning Sparks CS Northridge Past Chapman

Cal State Northridge scored nine runs in the fifth inning and defeated Chapman, 11-4, in a nonconference baseball game Friday at Northridge.
Northridge (24-11) got to Panther starter Corey Giuliano for 10 runs in 4 1/3 innings. He left the game during the fifth inning, which featured a grand slam by Andy Small.
Giuliano dropped to 7-4.
Trevor Rush and Ben Mendoza hit bases-empty home runs for Chapman (18-22). Buster Nietzke, Octavio Medina, Chris Briones and Abijah Alastra each had two hits for the Panthers, whose three-game series with Northridge continues today at Hart Park.

In women’s tennis:
UC Irvine 9, Cal State Sacramento 0--Ali Yoshimoto won at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2, to lead UC Irvine (7-11).

In the California Coastal Conference men’s volleyball tournament:
Pacific Christian 3, Pacific Union 2--Jim Shields had 23 kills and Pat Riley had 18 for Pacific Christian, which won, 15-17, 14-16, 15-12, 15-7, 15-8. Setter Aris Pologeorgis had 38 assists for Pacific Christian.
