Water Issues Here to Stay
The 1986-1993 drought has officially been declared over. But the need to use water efficiently is here to stay.
The availability of adequate water supplies is both a short and a long-term problem. Sufficient rainfall solves the short-term drought problem. But the inadequate long-term water supply issue is still with us.
Our long-term water supply is inadequate to meet the needs of a growing California population, historically predictable consecutive dry years and overdraft of ground-water basins.
Water conservation may appear to be less urgent with the end of the drought, but extending current supplies as long as possible will help us get through future droughts and help ensure long-range planning for adequate and cost-effective supplemental water supplies.
