It’s a Long Way to ‘Tax Freedom Day’

WASHINGTON — Millions of Americans settled accounts with Uncle Sam on Thursday.
What they might not have known was that the average U.S. worker will have to toil until May 3 to pay 1993 personal taxes--federal, state and local. After that date, workers can start working for themselves.
The Tax Foundation’s estimate assumes that the U.S. tax burden is divided equally among U.S. workers, and that every dollar earned is claimed by the government until the burden is paid.
In California, “Tax Freedom Day” is set for May 7 because of the state’s relatively high state and local taxes.
