College of the Canyons freshman first baseman Andy Shaw, the brother of Cal State Northridge assistant P.C. Shaw, said Tuesday he will sign a letter of intent with Northridge today, the first day of the spring signing period. The left-handed hitter from Montclair Prep is batting .480 with eight home runs and 30 runs batted in.
“I’m looking forward to being a Matador,” Shaw said, citing his brother’s position, Northridge’s proximity to his home, the competitiveness of the Western Athletic Conference and the way the ball carries at Matador Field for left-handed hitters.
Pierce catcher/outfielder Josh Smaler said he probably will sign with Northridge before the end of the week. Smaler, a right-handed hitter who went to Agoura High, is batting .337 with three home runs and 26 RBIs. He has 14 stolen bases in 15 attempts.
