Central Michigan basketball Coach Keith Dambrot was fired after first being suspended on April 1 for four days for using a racially derogatory term in front of his team.
He allegedly told his players, “I wish we had more . . . on this team.” He also allegedly said, in reference to assistant coach Derrick McDowell, “Mac’s a . . .”
University spokeswoman Rae Goldsmith said campus and community groups as well as alumni had been calling the university to express their outrage.
Dambrot declined to comment on his dismissal Monday night, saying his attorney was out of town. But he said he was informed of the university’s decision by Dave Keilitz, Central Michigan’s director of athletics.
Dambrot coached at Central Michigan for two years, going 20-34.
