National Video Rentals : ‘Last’ to First in Three Weeks
- Share via
“The Last of the Mohicans” made it to the top of the chart after only three weeks in the video stores. Although it debuted at a low No. 36, it jumped to No. 5 last week and claimed the top spot this week, bumping out “A League of Their Own.” A few mentions at Monday’s Academy Awards (it won for best sound) probably won’t hurt its staying power. “Mr. Baseball” entered the chart at a surprisingly high No. 10, considering it made a disappointing $20.9 million at the box office. “Singles” debuted this week at No. 8. The ensemble romantic comedy with Campbell Scott, Bridget Fonda and Matt Dillon made only $18.3 million at the box office, but could do well in the cheap-date rental market.

* Marisa Tomei’s best supporting actress Oscar may help keep No. 22 “My Cousin Vinny” on the charts and could even propel it back into the Top 20.
