Radio Station Gives Motorists Park Information

Motorists passing through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area can obtain park information in English and Spanish through radio messages transmitted on AM frequency 1610, National Park Service officials say.
Travelers can pick up the radio messages within 2 1/2 or three miles of transmitters in the following areas: Malibu Creek State Park along Las Virgenes Road near Mulholland Highway, the Rocky Oaks park site on Kanan Road near Mulholland Highway, Malibu Lagoon State Beach along Pacific Coast Highway and Sycamore Cove in Point Mugu State Park.
Park Service officials said signs are being posted to alert travelers to the information service.
Each day, thousands of motorists pass through the recreation area without knowing that they are in one of the 367 units of the national park system. The radio messages, which are updated periodically, are meant to “introduce motorists and park users to the beautiful and diverse natural and cultural resources, recreational activities and special events available” in the park, recreation area Supt. David E. Gackenbach said.
