LA HABRA : 5 Streets to Get New Water Pipe, Hydrants

More than 5,000 feet of water pipe throughout the city will soon be replaced in an effort to increase water pressure for residents and firefighters.
“We have to upgrade the old system to new standards in order to take care of the needs of our public,” said Jack Miller, a senior engineering aide.
He said some of the city’s oldest worn-out water pipes under five streets will be replaced with wider pipes, allowing 28% more water to flow through.
As a result, firefighters will be able to extinguish fires quicker and 120 residences may experience a slight increase in water pressure.
The $269,723 project will begin within two months by a Mission Viejo engineering contractor. Completion is expected by July.
Streets affected include: Blake Street between Wilshire Avenue and Raymond Street, Raymond Street between Wilshire Avenue and Blake Street, La Casa Street between Del Sur and Buena Vista avenues and Colfax and Dexter streets between Stearns and Essex avenues.
In addition to the new pipes, 11 fire hydrants along the five streets will be replaced with 16 new ones, placed about 500 feet apart. The new hydrants will be able to handle more water pressure and are being installed to meet “modern requirements,” Miller said.
“If nothing more, residents will get peace of mind just knowing that the city has taken steps to increase fire protection in their neighborhoods,” he said.
