As “punishment” for her deplorable racial and anti-Semitic slurs, baseball’s Executive Council most certainly has not given Cincinnati Reds owner Marge Schott what she deserves (Feb. 4).
What the council considers as an appropriate punishment for one of our society’s graves ills amounts to nothing more than a six-month paid vacation attached to a relatively minimal fine.
While it may be true that racism is a permanent part of any multicultural society, if we, as a nation, hope to effectively combat the devastating effects of racial discrimination, then we must commit ourselves to a more aggressive campaign whereby “punishments” are both substantively meaningful and invariably enforced.
