Gas Tax to Pay for Car Insurance
Torres’ column on paying for car insurance at the gas pump was a very interesting proposal. As an insured private driver, I would be pleased to pay my insurance that way, and I can easily see that having everyone pay, in proportion to how much they drive, and having everyone insured, is in everyone’s best interests. It sounds like a fair and workable idea, especially when one factors in the good-vs.-bad-driver costs when the car is registered.
However, I have an interest in a limousine service, and I wonder how we and other commercial drivers would be affected by higher gas prices. We already have to pay insurance far higher than private drivers, and 30-40 cents per gallon more would be an unfair tax on those who must already pay high commercial insurance rates. Has anyone got a solution for this?
