PREP ROUNDUP : Free Throws Help Woodbridge Beat Irvine
Woodbridge took over sole possession of third place with a 43-41 victory over Irvine in a Sea View League boys’ basketball game Monday at Woodbridge.
The Warriors (12-8, 6-4 in league) made eight of nine free throws in the fourth quarter to stay in front. John Florance made four of the team’s free throws in the fourth quarter. Irvine (15-7, 5-5) had a chance to tie as time ran out but Woodbridge’s Gignesh Movalia blocked a shot.
In other Sea View League games:
Saddleback 74, Corona del Mar 65--Mel Lete had 18 points for Saddleback (7-14, 3-7). Chris Quinn scored 22 points for Corona del Mar (11-10, 4-6).
Santa Margarita 43, Newport Harbor 41--Adam Dzierzynski scored 16 points for Santa Margarita (18-3, 9-1 in league), ranked fourth in the county. Ramy Shoukry had 19 points and nine rebounds for host Newport Harbor (10-12, 3-7).
Tustin 88, University 75--DeJuan Matthews scored 21 points and Rod Scheuerman had 21 points and 16 rebounds for host Tustin (17-5, 8-2). Demitrius Zeigler had 32 points for University.
In Garden Grove League boys’ basketball:
Kennedy 63, Pacifica 54--Paul Pappas scored 24 points, including six three-pointers, for visiting Kennedy (19-3, 10-0). Pacifica is 10-8 and 5-5.
Los Amigos 64, Santiago 62--Mark Dillon scored 24 points for host Los Amigos (5-14, 4-6). Steve Davenport scored 20 points for Santiago (3-7 in league).
In Garden Grove League girls’ basketball:
Kennedy 47, Pacifica 46--Lynly Matsumoto had 18 points and 10 assists for Kennedy (15-5, 8-2). Pacifica is 4-11 and 3-7.
Santiago 67, Los Amigos 20--America Robledo scored 26 points for visiting Santiago (14-5, 7-3).
In Garden Grove League boys’ soccer:
Kennedy 4, Bolsa Grande 1--Eddie Lidyard had three assists and Sean O’Keefe scored two goals for host Kennedy (10-4-3, 5-3-1).
La Quinta 1, Rancho Alamitos 1--Pat Ferry scored for La Quinta (4-9-2, 2-6-2). George Talos scored for Rancho Alamitos (2-10-2, 2-6-2).
Pacifica 3, Santiago 1--Ron Weber scored two goals and Noe Granados scored once for visiting Pacifica (8-1-1 in league). Anthony Rodriguez scored for Santiago (10-3-1, 8-1).
In the Sea View League:
Saddleback 2, Corona del Mar 1--Raul Montes scored the game-winning goal with five minutes remaining for host Saddleback, which upset the second-ranked team in the county. Jason Boyce scored for Corona del Mar (18-1-4, 7-1-2).
Tustin 6, University 1--Albert Ewens had three goals for visiting Tustin (7-8-2, 4-4-2).
In the Olympic League:
Orange Lutheran 2, Whittier Christian 0--Chris Campbell scored two goals for host Orange Lutheran (7-3-2, 4-1-1).
