TENNIS / SAN FRANCISCO TOURNAMENT : Borg Beaten by Oncins in Opening Round

SAN FRANCISCO — Jaime Oncins of Brazil downed former great Bjorn Borg, who is attempting another comeback, 6-4, 6-7 (7-5), 6-4, Monday night in the first round of the Volvo San Francisco tournament.
In another night match, Patrick McEnroe beat Christian Seceanu, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Earlier in the day, Marcos Ondruska of South Africa defeated Jared Palmer, 6-1, 6-4.
Palmer led, 4-2, in the second set and was serving at 30-love before Ondruska recovered to score six of the next eight points and start a four-game sweep to victory.
Ondruska was eliminated in the first round of the Australian Open and also at tournaments in Adelaide and Auckland.
In Monday’s opening match, Jamie Morgan of Australia fought off match point in the second set before rallying to beat Todd Martin, 4-6, 7-6, 7-5, in a match that lasted nearly three hours and set the tournament schedule back.
Robbie Weiss defeated Simon Youl of Australia, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, and Gary Muller swept Sandon Stolle of Australia, 6-4, 6-3.
Muller, who is ranked No. 144 in the world, used his powerful serve to defeat No. 80 Stolle.
