Libertarians
In response to “Libertarians Succeed Without Winning Offices,” Dec. 14:
Contrary to the impression left the reader perusing this article, not all Libertarians support the term-limitation movement sweeping this nation.
Libertarians, first and foremost, believe in maximizing freedom in all transactions, private and public. A government-imposed limitation on terms of office is contrary to that principle.
Support for term limitations is rooted in the perception, obviously shared by Libertarians and non-Libertarians alike, that incumbents often have an unfair financial edge over challengers and, thus, generally become less responsive the longer they remain in power.
It’s ironic, but probably not too surprising as the age of Clinton approaches and American socialism springs to life again, that the one issue that Libertarians have been most successful in gaining popular support is one that so clearly violates our principles.
