Vladimir Smirnov defeated two former teammates and two Olympic champions in a World Cup 30-kilometer cross-country freestyle.
Two other former Soviet skiers, Michail Botvinov and Alexey Prokurorov, now of Russia, finished second and third, 51 and 55 seconds behind Smirnov.
