Re “Being Young in Japan and the U.S.,” World Report, Dec. 8:
A large important difference is found in the hours per day statistics. Japanese youths spend an average of 9:05 hours in school and doing homework. This is 3:20 hours more per day, or 58% higher than Americans.
Until this gap is narrowed, can anyone be astonished by our lack of competitiveness?
