Racing cross-town from one hospital to another, jockey Kent Desormeaux arrived at Arcadia Methodist on Wednesday in time to join his wife, Sonia, and their newborn son.
Joshua Jason Desormeaux, weighing 4 pounds 1 ounce, was born at 2:05 p.m. He is their first child.
His father, the nation’s leading jockey in earnings this year, was released earlier in the day from Centinela Hospital Medical Center in Inglewood, where he has been recovering since being kicked in the head by a horse last Friday at Hollywood Park and suffering multiple fractures of the skull.
Desormeaux, 22, is not expected to resume riding until some time in January at Santa Anita. He will still win the national money title for the first time. His horses have earned $14.1 million in purses, and the jockeys closest to him in the standings, Chris McCarron and Eddie Delahoussaye, are well under $13 million.
