BELGRADE : Whither Milosevic?

Sunday’s presidential election in Serbia is seen as a referendum on the bloody war that has already killed tens of thousands in the former Yugoslavia.
If incumbent nationalist strongman Slobodan Milosevic is reelected, it is likely to increase pressure for foreign military intervention in the conflict. His principal rival, federal Prime Minister Milan Panic, is committed to restoring peace. But some fear that if Panic wins, Milosevic may trigger a diversionary ethnic time bomb in predominantly Albanian Kosovo province, creating a state of emergency that would allow him to stay in power.
