Macy Narrows First-Quarter Loss: R.H. Macy & Co. said it lost $135.8 million during its fiscal first quarter ended Oct. 31. A year earlier, the retailer posted a $155.4-million loss. The New York-based company said it had sales of $1.482 billion for the latest period, a drop of 3.3% from a year earlier. The company, which is in Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization, said its sales at its stores in the eastern part of the country are improving. However, the company said sales at its Macy’s operations in California are weaker because of the state’s poor economic conditions.
