MGM Is Expected to Buy Stake in Carolco: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in return would get the rights to distribute Carolco movies after 1993. Sources said the size of the stake MGM would receive is still being worked out. The MGM purchase would help financially ailing Carolco, which produced such hit films as “Basic Instinct” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” in restructuring its finances. Carolco’s main lender is Credit Lyonnais, the French-owned bank that took control of MGM last year when it foreclosed on the studio’s former owner, Italian businessman Giancarlo Parretti.
