2 Eighth-Graders Win Scholarships
EXPOSITION PARK — The United Neighborhood Council and the Education Consortium of Central Los Angeles awarded $500 college scholarships to two eighth-graders at the consortium’s holiday party last week at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.
Ramiro Garate of George Washington Carver Middle School and TaRhonda M. Riles of Transfiguration School were selected from 31 students nominated by local schools. They will receive the scholarships in 1997 if they enroll in a college or trade school, said Greta Pruitt, president of the consortium.
The council, a coalition of residents, community organizations, businesses and educational institutions, organizes community health fairs, helps train USC students studying social work, and supports day-care and Head Start programs.
The consortium, whose members include the county museums in Exposition Park, local colleges and universities, the school district and the archdiocese, works with the area’s 48 public and parochial schools, supporting teachers and students with research, training and cultural programs.
