OUTLOOK
The Vaqueros gave Kennedy a good chase for the league title last season, but Hamamoto now has a young team that realistically won’t be capable of matching that success. “We are very inexperienced,” said Hamamoto, who enters his fourth season with the Vaqueros. “The new guys played a lot over the summer, but that’s about it. And summer ball is a totally different thing.” The three returners, however, played extensively last season and are expected to carry the load. Taylor, who averaged 14 points, and Bustamante, who averaged six, are all-league players. Guzman averaged eight points. One of the main problems for Hamamoto will be to find a suitable replacement for point guard Garrett Fukuda, who graduated. Fukuda, who Hamamoto said was “quick and smart,” averaged 8.1 assists last season. “We are going to try and run,” Hamamoto said. “I think that if I don’t have a point guard, I have to run the ball. If Parrish matures into the position, we might mix it up a little bit.” Hamamoto also hopes Ross, a bruising tackle on the football team, can crash the boards and command some respect in the paint. “On defense, we’ll have to try different zones because we are not tall or quick,” Hamamoto said.
