LOS ANGELES : City Controller Questions Amount of Overtime Pay
- Share via
Los Angeles City Controller Rick Tuttle has called for a review of overtime payments to city employees after his office found that nearly one-fifth of the city’s 32,000 employees earned more than $5,000 in the last 11 months for working extra hours.
Tuttle said that much of the overtime pay might be unavoidable--including more than $20 million to police and firefighters for duty during last spring’s riots--but that department heads should scrutinize all payments closely.
The Fire Department led the way in overtime, with 1,425 employees earning $15,000 or more in overtime. The Police Department had 208 employees earning $15,000 or more in overtime, with much of the pay for inactive duty, such as remaining on call for court appearances, according to the controller’s office.
Tuttle called on department heads to review the pay to make sure that it was appropriate.
