CALABASAS : Rosa Parks to Talk at Soka University
- Share via
Civil rights leader Rosa Parks will speak from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Soka University near Calabasas.
Parks, who is famous for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated bus 37 years ago, will speak about the history and future of civil rights in the United States. Parks’ action sparked the Montgomery, Ala., bus boycott led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The speech is part of a human rights lecture series at Soka, a Tokyo-based school that wants to expand its small language program into a four-year college and high school. A state parks agency is in the process of trying to use its powers of eminent domain to acquire part of the land for a Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area headquarters and visitors center.
The lecture is free, but reservations are required. Soka University is located on the Mulholland Highway at Las Virgenes Road.
