DIVISION IV : TOP PERFORMERS
Corona del Mar junior tailback J.R. Walz rushed for 148 yards and a touchdown to help the Sea Kings topple Century League champ Orange, 13-10. That followed a 150-yard performance in a first-round victory over Chaminade.
SHOWDOWNS
The duel between running backs Scott Seal of Irvine and El Modena’s Ernie Johnson failed to materialize, but Vaquero quarterback Aron Garcia and wide receiver Todd Thomas filled the bill.
Garcia completed 19 of 31 passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns. Two of his passes were intercepted. Thomas caught 10 passes for 123 yards and a 14-yard touchdown reception.
Seal finished with 87 yards in 19 carries while Wilson was held to 36 yards in 12 carries.
UPSETS
After spotting Riverside Rubidoux a touchdown lead in the first quarter, Newport Harbor (10-2) rallied to upset the previously unbeaten Falcons, 28-14, in Division IV. Colin Morris scored on runs of 47 and 12 yards to lead Newport Harbor offensively.
NICE VIEW
The Sea View League improved its playoff record to 7-1, placing three teams in the semifinals and guaranteeing the league a representative in the championship game for the fifth season in a row.
Only a loss by Santa Margarita to Foothill kept the league from becoming the first in county history to send four teams to the semifinals in the same season.
