Murphy’s Career as Titan Coach to End Against Nevada Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS — Gene Murphy’s 13-year Cal State Fullerton coaching career will end today when the Titans (2-8) play Nevada Las Vegas (5-5) in a Big West Conference game in the Silver Bowl at 1 p.m.
Murphy, who announced Oct. 1 that he would retire at the end of the season, takes a 74-95-1 record into the season finale, including a 59-88-1 mark with the Titans.
Murphy guided the Titans to a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. title and California Bowl berth in 1983 and an 11-1 record in 1984, but the Titans, because of budget cuts and instability in the program, have struggled in recent years, going 5-28 since 1990.
Today’s game is probably Fullerton’s last in Division I-A and could be its last ever. School President Milton A. Gordon said he would determine by the second week in December whether to remain in I-A, drop to Division I-AA or drop football altogether.
