A YEAR IN A DAY: This is the last major weekend of college football before the bowl games. One of the most improbable heroes in any season roundup has to be John Barnes, the walk-on fourth-string quarterback who led UCLA to victory over USC last week. . . . Those most surprised might have been from Saddleback College. Barnes, from Mission Viejo, passed for 385 yards against USC. That surpassed his entire season as a backup quarterback at Saddleback in 1989, when the Gauchos fell to 1-9.
