NATION IN BRIEF : NATIONWIDE : Legal Abortion Rate Rose Steadily in ‘80s

The rate of legal abortions climbed steadily in the 1980s, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta reported. In a special report, the agency said 1,396,658 legal abortions were performed in the United States during 1989, the latest year for which statistics are available. That represented an increase of 1.9% from 1988, the agency said. The agency said the rate of abortion was 346 for every 1,000 live births. Women 20 to 24 years old had about 32% of all abortions.
