NATIONAL FOREST : Drain Project to Close Access Road
Happy Canyon Road will be closed from the southern boundary of Los Padres National Forest north to Cachuma Campground in Santa Barbara County from Monday through Friday while workers replace a drainage culvert along the road, officials said.
After the Cachuma brush fire burned large amounts of vegetation in the area in August, U.S. Forest Service engineers determined that the lack of plant life increased the potential for runoff during winter rains, the Forest Service said in a prepared release.
Because of this, the larger drainage pipeline is needed to protect the roadway from water damage.
Cachuma Campground will be open during the culvert replacement, but access to both Cachuma and Davey Brown campgrounds will be from the north on Figueroa Mountain Road.
Forest Service officials stressed that Cachuma Campground should not be confused with camping facilities at Lake Cachuma. The county-operated Lake Cachuma Recreation area, located on California 154, is not affected by the Happy Canyon Road closure.
