Two children playing with a lighter touched off an early morning fire Friday that damaged two rooms of an Oak View home, Ventura County Fire Department dispatcher Annie Ironside
said.
The fire at a home on the 500 block of Riverside Road began at 8:09 a.m. and was out by 8:33 a.m. The fire was contained in two rooms of the single-family home, Ironside said.
The fire, which claimed the lives of a family dog and a parakeet, began in a child’s bedroom and spread to an adjoining bedroom, said Capt. Russ Emory at the Oak View Fire Station.
Emory said the home had no smoke detectors.
Damage to the four-bedroom, one-bath home was estimated at $25,000, with an additional $7,000 lost in personal property inside the home.
No one was injured in the fire.
