Another Aftershock Hits Desert

Another aftershock of the destructive Landers quake rolled across Southern California’s high desert Thursday, rattling windows and setting off burglar alarms but causing no injuries or major damage, authorities reported.
The magnitude 3.9 quake hit at 1:41 p.m. and was centered six miles northeast of Barstow, Caltech seismologist Riley Geary said.
Jack Davis, who manages in campground in Yermo, a few miles southeast of the epicenter, said the earthquake rattled his building for about 10 seconds.
“It was a good shake. You could hear it coming; sounded sort of like a freight train,” Davis said. “But we’re kind of getting used to them.”
Thursday’s quake was one of more than 30,000 aftershocks that seismologists have tied to the 7.5 magnitude quake that struck early June 28 near Landers, jolting a wide area of Southern California and causing $52 million in damage.
A spokeswoman at the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department station in Barstow said Thursday’s shaker triggered burglar alarms in the area but caused no other reported problems.
