NEW YORK — The Planned Parenthood Federation of America Friday named a Catholic nurse as its president, signaling a new direction for the group that has been at the center of the battle over abortion rights.
The new president, Pamela Maraldo, said the group will remain dedicated to maintaining and strengthening abortion rights but will also enter the debate over a national health care policy.
Maraldo, who takes office Feb. 1, 1993, replaces Faye Wattleton, who resigned this year after 14 years at the helmof Planned Parenthood.
