DIVISION 3A FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS
RBV 29, Bonita Vista 7--The Longhorn defense held Brian Melancon--who came in with 1,111 yards--to five yards on four carries. RBV (5-6) was led by Leon Hawes, who scored on a 38-yard run and an 11-yard pass reception. Lee Johnson, who opened the scoring with a 20-yard touchdown run, finished with 96 yards on 14 carries. The Barons finished 7-4.
Mt. Carmel 33, Southwest 7--Marlon Carey rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries and Trong Nguyen kicked field goals of 20 and 38 yards for Mt. Carmel (9-1-1). The Sundevils’ Chad Moon blocked a field goal attempt and threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Jason Payne on a fake punt. Southwest finishes 6-5 and Mt. Carmel plays Castle Park Saturday in the quarterfinals.
Morse 41, Grossmont 16--Archie Amerson scored on runs of 48, eight and one as Morse (11-0) romped over Grossmont (6-5).
Monte Vista 21, Chula Vista 14--After extending a winning streak to 36 consecutive league games during the season, Chula Vista could not win any of its last four and finished at 5-4-2. Monte Vista (7-4) will play No. 1 Morse on Friday in the quarterfinals.
Orange Glen 41, Sweetwater 8--Orange Glen was one of three Palomar League teams to roll past a Metro Conference foe in round one and prove that the coaches’ advisory committee made a good choice when it took a fifth Palomar team and snubbed Montgomery, the Metro Conference’s sixth-place team which had a better record than some of the Palomar varsities. Orange Glen plays RBV Saturday in the quarterfinals.
