Fountain Valley Routs Warren, 44-28
DOWNEY — Quarterback Scott Bertoni completed 11 of 15 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for another to lead Fountain Valley to a 44-28 victory over host Downey Warren Friday night in the first round of the Southern Section Division II playoffs.
Wide receiver Mark Ziemke, who caught five passes for 149 yards, had all three touchdown receptions. The victory set up a second-round showdown against top-seeded Los Alamitos (11-0), a 41-14 winner over Arcadia.
Fountain Valley (7-3-1) scored on its first play of the game as Bertoni connected with Ziemke on a 66-yard touchdown pass. But Warren (7-4) answered four plays later with a 69-yard touchdown run by Jarvis Watson.
Fountain Valley took a 35-14 lead by scoring three consecutive touchdowns. Bertoni threw passes of 18 and 40 yards to Ziemke and the Barons’ Jeremy Nicholson scored on a seven-yard run.
