Dana Point / San Juan Capistrano : Termite Inspection Scam Is Reported
Orange County sheriff’s officials are warning homeowners in Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano about an apparent phone scam by a man posing as a termite inspector. “He is telling people that termite inspection is required by law, which it isn’t,” said Lt. Bob Rivas. “Then he tells them to leave their key outside someplace or in the mailbox, and adds that the homeowner will be fined if they fail to comply.”
“We think the motive is probably burglary,” he said. “At this point, we’re not aware of anyone falling for the scheme. But someone is liable to go for it, and that could be costly. This is not a legitimate sales solicitation.”
Rivas advises anyone who gets such a phone call to contact local law enforcement authorities.
