USD Knocks Off Top-Ranked Portland in Soccer
The University of San Diego got two goals from David Beall and another from Alex Streicek to rout No. 1-ranked Portland, 3-0, and clinch its first West Coast Conference men’s soccer championship Friday night in front of a record crowd of 3,850 at Torero Stadium.
With the victory, the 20th-ranked Toreros automatically qualify for the NCAA playoffs. Pairings will be announced Monday. The Toreros (14-4, 4-1) have one nonconference match remaining Sunday at UC Irvine. Portland, the three-time defending WCC champion, is 12-4, 3-1.
USD took a 1-0 halftime lead with Beall scoring off assists from WCC points leader Guillermo Jara and WCC goal leader Chugger Adair 9 minutes 58 seconds into the match.
Streicek’s goal made it 2-0 at 62:24 with Jara and Adair earning their second assists of the night. Beall’s second goal, his sixth of the year, came 1:56 later off a free kick by Toby Taitano.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Jennifer Miller had 12 kills and a .588 hitting percentage to lead San Diego State to a 15-10, 15-12, 15-3 sweep of Wyoming in a Western Athletic Conference match in Laramie, Wyo. The Aztecs (19-8, 4-5) held the Cowboys (14-8, 5-5) to a .011 hitting percentage.
Point Loma Nazarene swept The Master’s College, 15-4, 15-5, 15-9, in a District 3 game at PLNC (19-6, 13-3). Roberta Smith paced the Crusaders with nine kills, two solo blocks and three service aces. The Masters fell to 13-19, 4-11. PLNC plays Cal Baptist at 7:30 tonight for the second seed in the district, going into playoffs.
