HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL SOUTHERN SECTION ROUNDUP : Smith Throws for 348 Yards to Lead Newbury Park
Junior quarterback Keith Smith completed 28 of 37 passes for 348 yards and two touchdowns to lead Newbury Park High to a 43-22 win over Westlake in a Marmonte League game Friday night at Westlake High.
After a 30-yard field goal by Scott Morris put the Warriors (2-7, 2-4 in league play) ahead 3-0 early in the first quarter, Smith drove the Panthers (7-2, 5-1) 92 yards in seven plays, completing all six of his passes to account for 91 of the yards. Richard Adams’ one-yard scoring run put the Panthers ahead to stay.
Smith completed his first nine passes and connected on his first 12 attempts in the second half. In the last two quarters, he completed 13 of 15 for 139 yards.
Receiver Jason Toohey caught 11 passes for 121 yards. Jason Tucker caught six passes for 61 yards, including both scoring passes, and Leodis Van Buren caught five passes for 82 yards.
Billy Miller caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Brian Field to highlight Westlake’s scoring.
