WORLD IN BRIEF : NORWAY : Prime Minister Quits as Labor Party Chief

Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland, 53, said she is stepping down as leader of the Labor Party for personal reasons after almost 12 years. She stays on as head of government. One of Brundtland’s four children committed suicide a month ago. Brundtland is the dominant politician in Norway and is known internationally for campaigning for the environment and women’s issues.
