Notre Dame’s Garza to Make Commitment to Attend Nevada

Notre Dame High pitcher Chris Garza, who threw a no-hitter last spring and ranked among the area leaders in victories, said he will make an oral commitment today to play baseball at Nevada.
Garza, a senior left-hander who was 9-2 with an earned-run average of 3.01 last spring, said he plans to sign a letter of intent Wednesday, the first day of the NCAA’s weeklong early signing period.
The scholarship will cover approximately 85% of his tuition costs, Garza said.
As a junior at Notre Dame last spring, Garza (5-foot-10, 165 pounds) had 90 strikeouts and allowed 48 hits in 72 2/3 innings, but he walked 78.
Garza is the fifth high school senior from the region to land a Division I baseball scholarship, joining infielders David Lamb of Newbury Park (Pepperdine), Dan Cey of El Camino Real (California), Brad Fullmer of Montclair Prep (Stanford) and pitcher Justin Siegel of Taft (North Carolina State).
Garza played last summer for the Van Nuys-Notre Dame American Legion team that won the District 20 title. Garza was 5-1 with an ERA of 2.56 in 34 1/3 innings.
