DIGEST Mauldin, Fix Honored as Players of Week
For the second consecutive week, Valley College quarterback Joe Mauldin has earned recognition as a Western State Conference offensive player of the week. Justin Fix of Pierce was among three defensive players honored.
Mauldin, a sophomore from San Fernando High, rushed for 236 yards and two touchdowns in 21 carries and completed 10 of 28 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns in the Monarchs’ 55-42 loss to Bakersfield.
Fix, a 6-foot-2, 230-pound freshman nose tackle from Canyon High, had eight tackles (four unassisted), 1 1/2 sacks, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and one pass deflection in Pierce’s 21-7 victory over L.A. Southwest.
Taft High will take a 13-0 record and a No. 1 ranking into the opening round of the City Section 4-A Division tennis playoffs today at 12:30 p.m. against University at the Racquet Centre in Studio City.
Palisades, winner of 13 consecutive City titles, will meet North Hollywood and Chatsworth will play Birmingham in 2 p.m. matches.
In another 12:30 p.m. match, Granada Hills will meet Grant.
Moorpark and Glendale remained close in state and Southland junior college football polls. Moorpark (6-0-1) is seventh in the Southland and ninth in the state. Glendale (6-1) is eighth in the Southland and 12th in the state.
