Britain Rules Queen Shall Not Be Taxed

LONDON — Queen Elizabeth and other members of the Royal Family will continue to pay no income tax, the government said Tuesday in the face of protests from the opposition.
Chancellor of the Exchequer Norman Lamont was asked in Parliament by the opposition Labor Party whether he would bring the royals into the tax net. “I have no plans to do so,” he replied.
Labor Party member Dennis Canavan said, “It is a deplorable answer, particularly bearing in mind the fact that the queen is one of the richest people in the world.”
The question of whether the queen should pay tax on her large private income surfaced during the summer, acquiring added interest as the British economy slipped further into recession.
The queen’s private fortune has been estimated at as much as $13 billion.
